Decolonizing Patriotism

blue skies
green grass
wispy clouds

the land of my ancestors
belongs to the earth
we are just the caretakers

now we have
hazy grey smog
concrete jungles
and smoke signals

we must protect
the water, soil, and air
we must protect our future

Whence She Came, Where She’s Gone

She writhed wildly on the ground.
A thunderous clap echoed.
A chasm split her open
and her resolve burst asunder.

She was no longer whole.

Suffering and sorrow spewed forth
as tears pooled where her cheek
met the earth.
Blinding light called her home.

Lift Off

IMG_9621

I clung to her.

My arms lashed
tensely around her waist,

like I might lift off
and be swept away

when the wind blows.

Carried away like
so many leaves

off into the sky…

I might turn into
nothing more

than a faded memory.

Salt and Vellum

“It’s always
the fine print
that hurts the most.”
she said.

Salt and silence
fall softly like
leaves to the page.

She cannot bear
to look away
even though
the ink betrays her.

Budding promises
stomped out
before she had time
to savor them.

This poem is dedicated to my darling daughter Raven whose love and affection for books rivals any put to pen and paper. ♥
